Rhys' expertise lies in conservation ethics, and focuses on how are efforts fit into the wider literature.
Rhys' research interests span conservation ecology, with a specific focus on macroecology, remote sensing, and community ecology. Overall, he is driven by a desire to increase our understanding of what species and ecosystems are most threatened, why some are more resilient or vulnerable than others, where environmental pressures are most impactful, and how this knowledge can actively inform policy and the prioritisation of interventions to preserve and restore biodiversity.
Rhys is currently part of the Community and Landscape Ecology (CaLE) Lab led by Dr Cristina Banks-Leite as part of the Grantham Institute’s Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet Doctoral Training Programme. Here, his research involves assessing the benefits of large-scale restoration for biodiversity in the Amazon Rainforest, and explores potential priorities for restoration globally.
